Managed Care Organizational Change, Clarification of Changes

I.              Managed Care Organizational Change

Effective on October 1, 2013, United Healthcare Community Plan (UHCP) will cease operation as a Medicaid MCO in South Carolina.  All members enrolled with UHCP on this date will be transferred to WellCare of South Carolina (WellCare) and will have the opportunity to choose a different health plan between October 1, 2013 and December 20, 2013.  Members may select a different health plan by going to or by calling South Carolina Healthy Connections Choices at 1-877-552-4642 for assistance.

II.            Clarification of Changes

A.   Prior Authorizations for pharmacy and durable medical equipment issued by UHCP prior to October 1, 2013 will be honored by WellCare in accordance with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services MCO Policy and Procedure Manual.

B.   WellCare will be issuing all transferred members a new health plan benefits card.  This process will not be immediate.  Providers are reminded to confirm Healthy Connections eligibility and health plan enrollment prior to rendering services.

C.   All claims for services rendered to UHCP members prior to October 1, 2013 should be filed with UHCP as before.  This would include inpatient hospitalizations that overlap the transition date (admissions prior to 10/1/2013 and discharges after that date).  All claims for services rendered on or after October 1, 2013 should be filed with WellCare.

D.   The five (5) Day Emergency Pharmacy supply rule applies to all members transferring into WellCare.

E.   Women who are pregnant and seeing OB providers that are not in the WellCare provider network may continue with these providers throughout their entire pregnancy and for one postpartum visit after the baby is born.  They do not need to choose another OB provider or hospital.
