Final Physician Assistants Public Notice

The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS), pursuant to the requirement of 42 CFR 447.205, gives notice of the following action regarding Physician Assistants.

Effective on or after October 1, 2015, SCDHHS will amend the State Plan under Title XIX of the Social Security Act Medical Assistance Program (Medicaid) to include Physician Assistants (PAs). PAs who are already enrolled will not need to take any action as a result of this change.

Reimbursement for PAs will be established at the same rate as Nurse Practitioners. Nurse Practitioners are reimbursed at 80 percent of the current Medicaid physician fee schedule. This change affects claims that are billed under the PA's National Provider Identifier (NPI) number. The fiscal impact of this policy change is dependent on the practice patterns of providers and upon the timing of the changes in these practice patterns.

Copies of this notice are available at each County Department of Health and Human Services office and at for public review. Additional information concerning this action is available upon request at the address cited below.

Any written comments submitted may be reviewed by the public at the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Services, 1801 Main Street, Columbia, South Carolina, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M.
