The Medicaid Advisory Council (MAC) has been established to serve as a key advisory body to the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS), providing expert guidance on the delivery and improvement of medical care services for the state's most vulnerable populations. With a primary focus on fostering a consumer-driven approach, the MAC aims to enhance the efficiency, accessibility, and effectiveness of the South Carolina Healthy Connections Medicaid program. This approach ensures services are not only tailored to meet the diverse needs of Medicaid recipients but are also designed to improve overall health outcomes.
The MAC will play an instrumental role in helping SCDHHS better address the complex healthcare needs of South Carolina's Medicaid population. This includes offering evidence-based recommendations and insights to the SCDHHS director. These recommendations and insight will inform policy development, program improvements, and strategic planning aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability and success of Medicaid services in the state.
The creation of the MAC aligns with federal requirements outlined in Title 42, Sections 431.12 and 438.104 of the Code of Federal Regulations, which mandate the establishment of advisory councils to help guide the direction of Medicaid programs and ensure they meet the needs of beneficiaries effectively. Through its work, the MAC will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of South Carolina's Healthy Connections Medicaid program.
In accordance with this change in federal requirements, SCDHHS' previous Medical Care Advisory Committee (MCAC) was dissolved effective Jan. 31, 2025. MCAC materials are maintained for reference on SCDHHS' website here.
