- How to become a Certified nurse aide in South Carolina?
- TEMPORARY NURSE AIDES to fully certified C.N.A. –This temporary examination route ends October 06, 2022. Must pass both parts of the exam (written and skills) to become fully certified. SC nursing facility providers must complete and send the South Carolina Temporary Nurse Aide Provider Attestation Form to scnar@scdhhs.gov to verify TNAs employment and one of the following training requirements were met.
Option 1: Worked 6 months as a TNA
Worked as a TNA in a nursing facility during the PHE between January 27, 2020 - April 06, 2022, for a minimum of 6 months and completed the 8-hour TNA course to satisfy classroom training hours.
Option 2: Worked less than 6 months as a TNA
Worked as a TNA in a nursing facility during the PHE between January 27, 2020- June 05, 2022. Worked 40 hours as a TNA and completed a minimum of a 60-hour classroom training course from a state-approved nurse aide training program. The 40 work hours as a TNA counts as credit of the required 40 clinical hours of nurse aide training.
Providers send attestation form to scnar@scdhhs.gov > SCDHHS receives form and verifies listed TNAs meets an option and also registered by that option in cna365 >SCDHHS approves TNA application>Approved TNA able to schedule examination(written and skills).
- Complete a 100-hour state-approved nurse aide training course–Must take and pass both parts of the exam (written and skills) within 24 months after completing training.

- Nursing Students-Current or prior nursing students that have successfully completed a fundamentals of nursing course within the past 2 years with a C or better, may send transcripts to scnar@scdhhs.gov for review, to get approval to test.
- RN/LPN/LVN -Current, active, U.S. compact nursing licensure or foreign licensed RN/LPN/LVN nurses. Send licensure information to scnar@scdhhs.gov
- Military personnel- May send transcripts of relevant nurse aide training to scnar@scdhhs.gov for review of approval to test.
- Lapsed South Carolina c.n.a certificationthat has been lapsedLESS THAN 2 years may test (written and skills exam) to get certification back to active status. Account Registration:
- Expired South Carolina c.n.a certificationthat has been lapsed2 yearsrequires re-training and re-testing. Complete a 100-hour state-approved nurse aide training course and re-test by E3 registration .Must take and pass both parts of the exam (written and skills) within 24 months after completing training.
